 So I'm teaching an online animation short course, and did this animation as a quick demo. Took me about 2.5 hours, but it included explaining to the students my thought process during the animation process, and I can't really draw and talk at the same time, hehehe.

Spiderman, classic Spiderman

 So I just went to see Spiderman: Across the Spiderverse and all I can say is... I'm speechless. It is a work of beauty, a masterpiece, and I admire any and all of the artists that worked in that monster of a movie. You have made the world a little better by putting so much art into it. Here's my very humble and now outdated version of good old Spidey.

Online videos are really cool for life drawing, even if one cannot be in a room with an actual model. 

Animal sketches

 So this time the life drawing session was not regular old boring oomans. This time we drew animals, but let me tell you, it was HARD. Every time we draw people, we build on our previous knowledge of years of doing just that. We develop some sort of shorthand for certain body parts, we quickly realize what the underlying anatomy is doing. But with animals, which have wildly varying proportions and anatomic features, and with action poses that seem really unusual to us. One minute was not enough to make a drawing I'd call nice, but all in all they do look interesting.

Trollstopia Reel

 

This is my reel for the Trollstopia show, seasons 2 and 3, from Dreamworks. They make an offshoot from their 3D movies and we were hired to produce it this time. I worked on this show during 2020-2021, so this was Atomic Cartoons' trial by fire at work-at-home productions. Since neither productivity nor quality dipped during the pandemic, I think it's safe to say that every studio is now confident that having a home office workforce is doable and reliable. The world has changed, my friends.

I think it ended up looking really nice, and the scenes were a lot of fun. That's what working with such a talented team will look like.

It's always such a challenge to draw people! Even if said people are pros and they KNOW how to pose. All the little nuances of muscle and bone, and we're not even getting into all the skin shades!!! I don't think I'll ever tire of doing this.

That being said, it's always a bit stressing to draw those 1-minute poses. Too fast!! Too fast!!
